Statement
It has always been a part of me to create. Painting is a form of letting what I see escape me, and become reality.
From a very early age I realized that I see differently than many of the people around me. For instance, when young and told to draw a tree, the interpretation had always been said “Brown trunk, Green leaves”. I never understood why I saw purple, Orange, yellow Green, Grey, White…… I saw movement.I saw the light bending shapes. I literally thought at times my eyes were playing tricks. The quintessential sky has never been “Just Blue” for me! This is a big part of me as a Painter. I get visions trapped inside my head and need to present them onto a substrate. I often walk away from a piece and gaze in amazement at what remains.
I found myself falling in love with fluid art. It was at this time, I underwent bilateral tendon operations on my wrists. Recovering from these repairs, I couldn’t use my paint brushes, or grab my charcoals. I decided to have a go at manipulating paints through, pouring Paint. I became fascinated with the colors, the movement, and the interactions. I started also playing with the paint with my fingers. This was so satisfying. The wheels started turning. In addition to this new fascination I wanted to create illusions. I would see the paint intermingle, and react based on density and structure of materials. I decided to combine my love of the Science of Chemistry. I went back to Chemistry 101, geeking out over manipulating products that contained polymers, and various oils. Mixing different weights and getting reactions. I Started making paint formulas that had a multitude of reactions. A passion was born!
I decided, I could work for a period of time mastering these effects to reach my end goal.
As an artist, I spent years doing art that I felt replicated artists of the past. I felt I was always doing really good work that had been seen before. I was searching for what felt like my personal expression. The first large scale fluid painting I attempted brought Lori to life. I reached the moment I had been looking for. From here on out, I set the standard for myself to marry fluid art with my love of expressionism. I knew I could create the landscapes and images I see through this fluid experience.
I am fully in love with the grandeur of scale, and the freedom of using my body fully to create. I never know whether the paint will tell me to tilt, or blow. I never know if I will find myself suspended over the canvas to reach an area, or lifting the giants while paint pours all over my head. There are times where I’m on the floor using body parts to move paint. This experience is all part of my unique approach to creating these works. My studio is always full of Music. Most of my work is paired with the immersion of sound. In the end I walk away exhausted yet fulfilled.
I look forward to advancing in the manipulation of color and science.
